Artist Louise Bourgeois dies in New York (AFP) – NIMBRUNG.NET
French-American contemporary artist Louise Bourgeois, known for her series of giant metal spiders, died Monday in New York at the age of 98, a spokeswoman said.
“I am very sad to confirm that Louise passed away this morning at Beth Israel Hospital after suffering a heart attack on Saturday night,” said Wendy Williams, managing director of the Louise Bourgeois Studio.
Among her most famous pieces are a series of giant spiders presented as symbols of the mother, entitled “Maman,” with one standing more than 30 feet (nine meters) high outside the National Gallery of Canada.
“The Destruction of the father,” a 1974 installation, depicts her traumatic relationship with her father.
Bourgeois, inspired at the beginning of her career by Max Ernst and Constantin Brancusi, had never classed herself into a particular artistic grouping, preferring instead to pursue her own personal brand of art.

U.S. believes it killed al Qaeda No. 3 (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) –
U.S. intelligence agencies believe al Qaeda’s No. 3 leader was killed recently in a missile strike in the tribal areas of Pakistan, officials said on Monday.
The CIA has stepped up the pace of unmanned aerial drone attacks, targeting not only high-level al Qaeda and Taliban targets but largely unknown foot soldiers as well.
A U.S. official said Sheikh Sa’id al-Masri, also known as Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, was widely seen as the group’s No. 3 figure and its main conduit to leader Osama bin Laden. As al Qaeda‘s chief operating officer, he had a hand in everything from finances to operational planning.
“We have strong reason to believe … that al-Masri was killed recently in Pakistan’s tribal areas,” the official said on condition of anonymity. “In terms of counterterrorism, this would be a big victory.”
In March, U.S. officials said a drone strike in Pakistan killed a key al Qaeda planner.

Christina Aguilera enters hipster territory as "Bionic" woman (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET
Inside a soundstage recently at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles, Christina Aguilera was talking about the inspiration behind her 2006 album, “Back to Basics,” on which she paid tribute to the soul and blues artists who inspired her to sing. Or at least that was what she started to talk about.
Seemingly out of nowhere, she was describing the process that led to “Bionic,” her futuristic new disc. “Sorry,” Aguilera told the 200 or so audience members gathered for this taping of VH1′s “Storytellers.” “I get ahead of myself sometimes. But they can edit this. Cut and paste!”
As it happens, “cut and paste” goes a long way toward describing the choppy postmodern vibe on “Bionic,” due June 8 from RCA. A pronounced about-face from the warmly retro-fied “Back to Basics” — which has sold nearly 1.7 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan — the 18-track set contains beat-driven collaborations with a host of edgy dance-music acts, including M.I.A., Le Tigre, Peaches and Switch. More mainstream talent appears as well, in the form of Polow Da Don, Tricky Stewart and longtime Aguilera confidante Linda Perry.
To be sure, “Bionic” comes loaded with the requisite number of radio-bait hooks, not to mention a handful of stately ballads destined to appeal to fans of the singer’s 2002 smash, “Beautiful.” (That single’s parent album, “Stripped,” has sold more than 4.2 million copies, while Aguilera’s 1999 self-titled debut has sold nearly 8.2 million.)
Yet with its grinding synth scapes and throbbing dance-punk grooves, “Bionic” also serves as a characteristically bold artistic statement from one of pop’s least apprehensive superstars. As Aguilera puts it in “Not Myself Tonight,” the album’s lead single, “I feel brand new/And if you don’t like it, f— you.”

Original "King Kong" coming to Blu-ray (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET
“King Kong,” the master of all movie beasts and one of the more important movies of the 20th century, will make its Blu-ray debut September 28.
Warner Home Video is behind the Blu-ray iteration of the 1933 RKO classic, which will have all of the extras from the highly rated two-disc DVD special edition released in 2005, to coincide with the Peter Jackson remake.
The Blu-ray will come with a 32-page booklet featuring rare photographs and trivia and is written by film historian Rudy Behlmer, who interviewed “Kong” creator Merian C. Cooper back in the day.

Relief for Gulf is 2 months away with another well (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET
NEW ORLEANS – The best hope for stopping the flow of oil from the blown-out well at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico has been compared to hitting a target the size of a dinner plate with a drill more than two miles into the earth, and is anything but a sure bet on the first attempt.
Bid after bid has failed to stanch what has already become the nation’s worst-ever spill, and BP PLC is readying another patchwork attempt as early as Wednesday, this one a cut-and-cap process to put a lid on the leaking wellhead so oil can be siphoned to the surface.
But the best-case scenario of sealing the leak is two relief wells being drilled diagonally into the gushing well — tricky business that won’t be ready until August.
“The probability of them hitting it on the very first shot is virtually nil,” said David Rensink, incoming president of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, who spent most of his 39 years in the oil industry in offshore exploration. “If they get it on the first three or four shots they’d be very lucky.”
The relief well drilling and temporary fixes were being watched closely by President Barack Obama, who planned to meet for the first time Tuesday with the co-chairmen of an independent commission investigating the spill. A senior administration official said the meeting will take place at the White House. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting had not been formally announced.
