Tintin memorabilia raises $1 million in Paris auction (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET
An auction of rare memorabilia of the Belgian cartoon series Tintin has raised more than 1 million euros ($1.23 million), organizers said on Monday.
The Tintin series, created by Georges Remi under the pen name Herge, has become one of the most popular comics in the world with translations in more than50 languages and 200 million copies of the 24 books sold.
There is huge appetite for collectors of anything related to the adventurous investigative reporter and his little white dog.
The Paris auction on May 29 included 230 items from about 70 collectors that even Herge’s foundation Moulinsart, a partner in the sale, never knew existed.
Total proceeds of the latest sale came to 1,072,110 euros, the organizers Piasa said in a statement.

Director Guillermo del Toro leaves "The Hobbit" (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET
After spending the last two years developing “The Hobbit” as his latest directing project, Guillermo del Toro has stepped down as director of the J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation amid studio delays and schedule conflicts.
“In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming “The Hobbit,” I am faced with the hardest decision of my life,” Guillermo wrote in his announcement on “Lord of the Rings” fansite TheOneRing.net. “After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures.”
He said he would continue to co-write the screenplays with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Phillippa Boyens.
The walls started to crumble for del Toro in recent weeks as the uncertain financial future of MGM put the project, which was to have been two movies, in limbo. The producers had been hoping to be in production this summer but no greenlight was forthcoming.
That put pressure on del Toro, who has a laundry list of projects outlined for the next 10 years, in a position of cutting bait or staying on for more uncertainty. The director moved his wife and children to New Zealand for the shoot, and the first movie was aiming for a December 2012 release.

"Bondi Rescue" lifeguard breaks neck in surfing wipeout (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET
Australian lifeguard Kobi Graham, one of the stars of the hit television series “Bondi Rescue,” broke his neck after wiping out on a large wave at a dangerous Sydney surf spot.
The 30-year-old lifeguard suffered “a hideous wipe out” at Cape Solander on Sunday, hitting the reef head first, local surf media website Coastalwatch (www.coastalwatch.com) said on Monday.
Coastalwatch posted photographs of the wipeout, showing Graham only moments before being thrown onto the reef and later of him being helicoptered to hospital, his neck in a brace.
Cape Solander near the entrance to Botany Bay is one of the world’s most dangerous surf breaks.
“The wave comes out of deep water before literally exploding on a shallow barnacle encrusted rock ledge no more than 10 metres (30 feet) in front of the sheer cliff face,” said Coastalwatch editor Ben Horvath.

Scientists warn of unseen deepwater oil disaster (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET
NEW ORLEANS – Independent scientists and government officials say there’s a disaster we can’t see in the Gulf of Mexico’s mysterious depths, the ruin of a world inhabited by enormous sperm whales and tiny, invisible plankton.
Researchers have said they have found at least two massive underwater plumes of what appears to be oil, each hundreds of feet deep and stretching for miles. Yet the chief executive of BP PLC — which has for weeks downplayed everything from the amount of oil spewing into the Gulf to the environmental impact — said there is “no evidence” that huge amounts of oil are suspended undersea.
BP CEO Tony Hayward said the oil naturally gravitates to the surface — and any oil below was just making its way up. However, researchers say the disaster in waters where light doesn’t shine through could ripple across the food chain.
“Every fish and invertebrate contacting the oil is probably dying. I have no doubt about that,” said Prosanta Chakrabarty, a Louisiana State University fish biologist.
On the surface, a 24-hour camera fixed on the spewing, blown-out well and the images of dead, oil-soaked birds have been evidence of the calamity. At least 20 million gallons of oil and possibly 43 million gallons have spilled since the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded and sank in April.

Gunmen open fire at Pakistan hospital, four dead: police (AFP) – NIMBRUNG.NET
LAHORE, Pakistan (AFP) –
Gunmen stormed a Pakistani hospital where victims of attacks on Ahmadi mosques were being treated late Monday, killing at least four people in a shootout with security forces, police said.
Disguised in police uniforms, they targeted the Jinnah Hospital in the eastern city of Lahore, where at least 30 victims and one of the alleged attackers in Friday’s suicide, gun and grenade attack on the minority sect were being treated.
“They started indiscriminate firing outside the emergency ward and intensive care unit,” Doctor Javed Akram told reporters.
Police said at least four people — three policemen and a woman — were killed after four gunmen rampaged into the hospital from the back.
Akram, who had initially put the death toll at 12, said that at least 30 wounded Ahmadis had been admitted to the hospital and that one of the alleged attackers of Friday’s devastating attacks was being treated in a private room.
