Japan’s prime minister steps down over base row (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Japans prime minister steps down over base row AP

TOKYO – Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama says he is resigning.

Hatoyama told a news conference broadcast nationwide on Wednesday that he will step down over his broken campaign promise to move a U.S. Marine base off the southern island of Okinawa.

After eight months in office, the embattled prime minister has faced growing pressure from within his own party to resign ahead of July elections.

His approval ratings have plummeted over the bungling of handling the Marine Air Station Futenma, reinforcing his public image as an indecisive leader.

Israel, Egypt ease Gaza blockade after deadly raid (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Israel Egypt ease Gaza blockade after deadly raid AP

JERUSALEM – Israel and Egypt signaled a temporary easing of the Gaza Strip blockade following harsh international condemnation of the deadly Israeli raid on an aid flotilla en route to the sealed-off Palestinian territory.

Egypt said it was freely opening its border with Gaza for the first time in more than a year to allow in humanitarian aid, setting off a mad rush to the crossing by thousands of residents, while an Israeli official said there is an “ongoing dialogue” with the international community on how to expand the amount of goods entering the area.

At the same time, Israel began expelling some of the nearly 700 activists it rounded up in the naval raid, and strongly rejected criticism that its tactics were heavy-handed. The government said late Tuesday it would deport almost all of them within the next two days, but about 50 would be held for investigation into their part in the violence at sea.

A group of 124 activists from nations without diplomatic relations with Israel was deported to Jordan before sunrise Wednesday, Israeli officials said.

Israel pledged to halt a new attempt by pro-Palestinian groups to sail more ships into Gaza, and claimed some of the arrested activists carried weapons and large quantities of cash, raising questions about whether they were mercenaries.

Gaga reveals she would have opened for Michael Jackson (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Gaga reveals she would have opened for Michael Jackson Reuters
NEW YORK (Billboard) –
Lady Gaga revealed that she was set to open for Michael Jackson in London before his death, in an interview with CNN’s Larry King scheduled to air Tuesday night (June 1) that also touched upon the pop star’s “borderline positive” lupus diagnosis.

Gaga — who wore sequined suspenders and a tie in a nod to her interviewer’s signature style (or perhaps the King of Pop) — shared that she was among several artists who would have opened for Jackson during his “This Is It” shows at London’s O2 arena. “I was actually asked to open for Michael on his tour,” Gaga said. “We were going to open for him at the O2, and we were working on making it happen … I believe there was some talk about us, lots of the openers, doing duets with Michael onstage.

“But Michael’s death was devastating for me, regardless of whether or not I was supposed to go on tour with him,” Gaga added. “He was such an inspiration and a remarkable human being.”

Gaga also addressed recent rumors that she has lupus, an autoimmune disease that she says runs in her family. “The truth is I don’t show any signs, any symptoms of lupus, but I have tested borderline positive for the disease,” she told King. “So as of right now I do not have it, but I have to take good care of myself.”

Another subject Gaga addressed was the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law that forces gay men and women serving in the military to stay closeted.

Charlie Sheen faces short jail stint in plea deal (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Charlie Sheen faces short jail stint in plea deal Reuters
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) –
Charlie Sheen, star of hit TV sitcom “Two and a Half Men,” is expected to enter a new plea of no contest to assaulting his wife in Colorado last year and could spend up to 30 days in jail, reports said on Tuesday.

Celebrity website TMZ.com said Sheen, 44, will enter the plea to a misdemeanor assault charge and, with credit for good behavior, a possible 30-day jail sentence could be reduced to 17 days.

A district attorney in Aspen, Colorado, where Sheen was charged, told Reuters he could not confirm or deny the plea, and an attorney for Sheen said no deal had yet been reached.

Sheen, the highest paid actor in television, is due in an Aspen courtroom Monday June 7 to face a judge in the matter.

The star of television and movies was arrested on December 25 for assaulting his wife, Brooke Mueller. She told police Sheen had pulled a knife on her when she threatened to divorce him.

South Koreans go to polls with one eye on North (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about South Koreans go to polls with one eye on North Reuters

SEOUL (Reuters) –
South Koreans voted in regional elections on Wednesday, a barometer of support for President Lee Myung-bak as he tries to push through business-friendly reforms, with the North Korea standoff a key campaign issue.

Campaigning for the polls to choose nearly 4,000 mayors, governors and local government representatives has been overshadowed by the sinking of a South Korean warship, which Seoul has blamed on the North, fuelling blistering rhetoric on both sides, including threats of war.

Lee’s uncompromising stand on the sinking has seen him and his Grand National Party (GNP) bounce back in opinion polls from a voter backlash after a decision to scrap a plan to shift a large part of the government from Seoul.

“When the elections are over, we need to accomplish the modernization of social systems needed to be a first-rate nation,” Lee told a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

GNP candidates in the key capital region races, including the governor for the Gyeonggi province and mayor for the giant port city of Incheon, have shown double-digit leads over Democratic Party opponents.
