Polaroid photographs raise $12.5 million at NY auction (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Polaroid photographs raise 125 million at NY auction Reuters
NEW YORK (Reuters) –
A sale of photographs from the collection of the Polaroid Corporation brought in $12.5 million, setting an auction record for iconic photographer Ansel Adams and new marks for the medium by artists including Andy Warhol, Chuck Close, and David Hockney.

The sale of 1,200 photographs from the Polaroid collection was ordered by U.S. bankruptcy court in Minnesota when businessman Tom Petters, whose operations once included Polaroid Corp., was convicted last year of a $3.65 billion Ponzi scheme.

Petters, sentenced in April to 50 years in prison, bought the bankrupt firm several years ago, and it was forced back into bankruptcy when the fraud was exposed in 2008.

Collectors and the curious jammed the salesroom at Sotheby’s — competing fiercely with telephone bidders for works by artists like Adams, who alone was represented by some 400 works. There were also works by Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, Lucas Samaras and William Wegman.

Nearly 90 percent of the lots offered found buyers, with the total easily beating the high pre-sale estimate.

John Lithgow over the top? Sure, why not? (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about John Lithgow over the top Sure why not Reuters
LOS ANGELES (Back Stage) –
Some actors might take umbrage if the title of their career retrospective was “Over the Top.” Not John Lithgow. The notoriously affable actor says of his sometimes oversized acting, “Well, it’s kind of my trademark. There’s no getting around it.”

While he may be best known for the big performances — like the alien masquerading as a human in the NBC comedy “3rd Rock From the Sun” that earned him three Emmy Awards — Lithgow has also played countless roles of a more subtle and nuanced nature. Consider his Oscar-nominated turns as a transgendered football player in “The World According to Garp” and the lonely husband who has an affair with Debra Winger in “Terms of Endearment.” Most recently, he completed an arc on Showtime’s “Dexter” that is certain to garner him an Emmy nod as Arthur Mitchell, a seemingly mild-mannered husband and father who also happens to be a serial killer.

When not recording CDs or writing books for children, the two-time Tony winner (for “The Changing Room” and “Sweet Smell of Success”) can be found developing and performing on his one-man show “Stories by Heart,” which has played Lincoln Center in New York and the National Theater in London. In it, Lithgow portrays several characters — including members of his own family — as he traces his path as an artist.

He talked to Back Stage about his career, “over-the-top” acting and being typecast.

HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN SOMEONE CALLS A PERFORMANCE OF YOURS OVER THE TOP?

Flood-hit dyke in south China suffers new breach (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Flood hit dyke in south China suffers new breach Reuters

FUZHOU, China (Reuters) –
A flood-battered dyke in China suffered a fresh breach on Wednesday as heavy flooding that has killed nearly 200 people in the past week intensified and about 100,000 residents fled after an earlier break in its wall.

The Fu River in Jiangxi province first burst through the protective Changkai Dyke late on Monday after days of torrential rain, threatening areas near the small city of Fuzhou.

The river punched through the embankment again early on Wednesday, said the official Xinhua news agency. Residents whose homes were threatened had already been evacuated at night, it said.

Troops in orange vests used boats to search for stranded residents and take them to safety.

“Our homes were not flooded, but at 2 a.m. the waters began to rise quite fast, so we hurried to pack our things and leave,” said one resident, who only gave his last name, Wu.

Argentina ease into last 16 as France go out (AFP) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Argentina ease into last 16 as France go out AFP

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) –
Argentina cruised into the last 16 of the World Cup on Tuesday but former winners France ended their nightmarish campaign meekly and South Africa became the first host nation to fall at the opening stage.

Uruguay beat Mexico 1-0 in their final game in Group A but both countries qualified for the knockout round after the French lost 2-1 to South Africa, who failed to score enough goals to overhaul second-placed Mexico on goal difference.

Argentina dominated Group B by brushing aside a stubborn Greece 2-0 in Polokwane, and South Korea reached the last 16 for only the second time after finishing runners-up despite being held to a 2-2 draw by Nigeria in Durban.

As the competition moves into the knockout round, the South Koreans will take on Uruguay on Saturday, while on Sunday Diego Maradona‘s dazzling Argentina face Mexico in the last 16 for the second time in successive World Cups.

KABUL, Afghanistan – Three NATO service members were killed in attacks and the head of a provincial health department died after a bomb planted in his private clinic exploded in northern Afghanistan.

The international coalition reported the three deaths Tuesday, bringing to at least 67 the number of its troops killed in the Afghan war so far this month.

British defense officials said a member of the 40 Commando Royal Marines was shot Tuesday during fighting in the Sangin district of southern Helmand province. Another member of the same unit died Monday in a blast in Sangin, officials said.
