Hot Breaking News about Writer Christopher Hitchens has cancer AFP
WASHINGTON (AFP) –
British-born author Christopher Hitchens, known for his writings on world politics and religion, announced Wednesday he has throat cancer and will cut short his latest book tour to undergo treatment.

The television pundit and Vanity Fair contributing editor, who has tried to quit smoking in recent years, said he was suspending a tour to promote his new memoir “Hitch-22.”

“I have been advised by my physician that I must undergo a course of chemotherapy on my esophagus,” he said in a statement.

“This advice seems persuasive to me. I regret having had to cancel so many engagements at such short notice.”

The self-described atheist announced in 2008 that he had quit smoking, although he has reportedly broken his vow on numerous occasions.

Researcher: Ozzy seeking health clues from DNA map (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Researcher Ozzy seeking health clues from DNA map AP
ST. LOUIS – Alcohol and drug abuse has killed too many rock stars to mention, but at 61, Ozzy Osbourne is going strong.
Now DNA researchers in St. Louis say they’re part of a team working to determine why decades of substance abuse didn’t take down the Prince of Darkness.
Jon Armstrong is chief marketing officer for St. Louis-based Cofactor Genomics. He said Wednesday that Osbourne has asked a Massachusetts human genomics company to map his DNA. Cofactor is partnering in the effort.
Armstrong says the mapping may not offer definitive answers about the longtime Black Sabbath front man’s relative longevity. But it could help understanding of the relationship between DNA and the environment.
Osbourne didn’t return messages seeking comment left with his agent and his wife’s management company.

British conductor leads U.S. Independence Day concert (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about British conductor leads US Independence Day concert Reuters
NEW YORK (Reuters) –
Bramwell Tovey, the conductor leading the popular Summertime Classics series at the New York Philharmonic this month, finds it amusing that a British musician is heading a concert to celebrate U.S. Independence Day.

“I feel as if I should apologize,” joked the Grammy Award-winning conductor and composer.

In a concert that Tovey will conduct to mark Independence Day on July 4, the New York Philharmonic will join forces with United States Military Academy Band.

When the West Point band performs the Armed Forces Service Medley, Philharmonic players who have served in the military will stand as the music representing the branch of the military where they served is played.

Tovey has no military background but he is descended from an army of another sort — The Salvation Army. His grandfather was a Salvation Army preacher and secretarial assistant to Bramwell Booth, the son of the Salvation Army’s founder William Booth.

Belgium: Is a Flanders-Wallonia Split Inevitable? (Time.com) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Belgium Is a Flanders Wallonia Split Inevitable Timecom

Many Wimbledon spectators watching Belgium‘s Kim Clijsters‘ three-set, fourth-round victory over her compatriot Justine Henin on Monday would have thought of how lucky one small country could be to produce two stunningly successful tennis stars. But lucky is not what Belgium feels right now. And even that sports rivalry between the Belgian stars embodies the current political fracas that has exposed the division between the country’s Dutch and French speakers: Clijsters‘ family is from the Dutch-speaking half, Henin‘s from the French.

Indeed, this is a moment of truth for the country straddling the dividing line between Europe‘s Germanic and Latin cultures. Wallonia, Belgium’s French-speaking southern region, has struggled to recover economically from a postwar industrial decline, and its proponents argue that Dutch-speaking Flanders should show more solidarity in helping it through. But the Flemish, who see themselves as more entrepreneurial and outward-looking, label Wallonia as sponging and feckless. (See Justine Henin’s decision to retire in 2008.)

The split personality of the country emerged in a befuddling election earlier this month, which left the country with no viable government. The biggest party in the Belgian Parliament is now the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), which seeks independence for Flanders, while the largest party in Wallonia is the Socialist Party (PS), which wants a stronger central government. Their respective leaders, the N-VA’s Bart De Wever and the PS’s Elio Di Rupo, are tentatively negotiating a coalition, but it is hard to see their common ground. A working coalition isn’t even likely until October, at the earliest. (See Belgium’s befuddling election.)

In the meantime, the economy is sputtering, and the country’s debt is one of the largest in Europe (currently at 99% of GDP, it is lower only than the debts of Greece and Italy). Then there is the grim irony of Belgium this week assuming the presidency of the troubled European Union for the next six months. The E.U. is committed to the idea of an “ever closer union” among the peoples of Europe, but its main institutions are based in Brussels, the capital of a country whose Dutch and French speakers are perpetually squabbling.

Yves Leterme, currently Belgium’s caretaker Prime Minister, said four years ago that the country was an “accident of history” and amounted to nothing more than “the King, the national football team and certain brands of beer.” Needless to say, Belgium’s once proud football squad did not qualify for this year’s World Cup in South Africa.
