NEW ORLEANS – Oil from BP’s blown out well is again seeping into the Gulf of Mexico, but this time, more slowly and scientists aren’t convinced the cap that stopped the flow last week is making things worse.

The government said Monday that oil was seeping into the Gulf after days of warning that the experimental cap on the oil well could cause more leaks.

Despite what at first seemed a setback, though, the federal government declared the development insignificant and forged ahead with BP’s plan for finally sealing the hole in the ocean floor.

Hot World News about Karzai reaffirms 2014 goal for Afghan-led security (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan – President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday reaffirmed his commitment for Afghan police and soldiers to take charge of security nationwide by 2014 and urged his international backers to distribute more of their development aid through the government.

Karzai spoke at a one-day international conference on Afghanistan’s future that comes at a critical juncture: NATO and Afghan forces have launched a major operation to drive the Taliban out of their strongholds, and the insurgents are pushing back. Rockets fired at the Kabul airport Tuesday forced the diversion of a plane carrying U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Sweden’s foreign minister.

Wearing a traditional striped robe and peaked fur hat, Karzai said that Afghanistan and its Western allies share “a vicious common enemy.” But, he said, victory will come in giving Afghans as much responsibility as possible in combatting the insurgency within its borders. He was flanked by international diplomats including Ban and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Hot Breaking News about Dennis Hoppers estate in SoCal to go on sale AP
LOS ANGELES – Dennis Hopper’s sprawling estate in Venice, Calif., is going on sale this Friday for about $6.2 million.
The property, where Hopper lived for more than 20 years, is located a few blocks from the Pacific and spans 15,550 square feet over five land parcels.
It is comprised of several structures, including the late actor’s 4,900 square-foot corrugated-steel house designed by architect Brian Murphy and three townhouses designed by Frank Gehry that Hopper used as office space and family residences.
Listing agent Jane Gavens of Coldwell Banker Previews says buyers also have the option to separately purchase the main residence, which was designed to be a showcase for the actor’s art and photography.
The “Easy Rider” star died May 29 at age 74 after battling cancer.

USDA worker quits over racism charge from video (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about USDA worker quits over racism charge from video AP

ATLANTA – A black federal worker has resigned from a Georgia agricultural job after a video clip showed her saying she had not helped a farmer as much as she could have because he was white.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement Tuesday he had accepted the resignation of Shirley Sherrod. Vilsack says the USDA has no tolerance for discrimination.

Sherrod told the Atlanta-Journal Constitution she was forced out of her job as the USDA’s rural development director for Georgia. She said the two-minute, 38-second video posted online Monday misconstrued her message.

Sherrod’s taped remarks were from a local meeting of the civil rights group NAACP.

National NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous welcomed the resignation because the group opposes racism of all kinds.
