Steppenwolf Announces Chicago Troupes for 2011 Garage Rep; ‘Heddatron, Dr. Crippen, Sonnets’ on Slate (Playbill) – NIMBRUNG.NET
Sideshow Theatre Company, The Strange Tree Group and UrbanTheater Company are the three Chicago companies that will present one work each in Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s 2011 repertory program known as Garage Rep.
For the second annual Garage Rep, the “innovative, young companies” will present three productions in rotating repertory Feb. 16–April 24, 2011, in Steppenwolf’s Merle Reskin Garage Theatre, 1624 N. Halsted St. Tickets will go on sale at a later date.
Steppenwolf’s director of artistic development Polly Carl said in a statement, “These are the kind of companies and artists who we know we can learn from. At its core, the Garage Rep is an opportunity for a dialogue between our respective companies and our audiences in hopes that we can build a fully multigenerational theatre for the 21st century. Sideshow, Strange Tree and UrbanTheater are already in a conversation with their own audiences that we’re anxious to listen in on.”
The Garage Rep 2011 productions and companies are:
Sideshow Theatre Company presents Heddatron by Elizabeth Meriwether, directed by Jonathan L. Green
“A book falls from the sky and a depressed Michiganian housewife is kidnapped by a clan of renegade robots, whisked away to the jungles of South America, and forced to perform the title role in a mechanical version of Hedda Gabler. As a documentarian searches for the truth about the abduction and the woman’s family mounts a search party, Ibsen himself enters the picture to defend his well-made play. Sideshow is partnering with robotics experts across Chicago to present a cast of human actors and functioning robots in this bizarre and savagely funny Chicago premiere.”
Sideshow Theatre Company was founded in 2007. Sideshow’s mission is “to mine the collective unconscious of the world we live in with limitless curiosity, drawing inspiration from the familiar stories, memories and images we all share to spark new conversation and bring our audiences together as adventurers in a communal experience of exploration.”

Ecuador bill would check media for "truthful" stories (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET
An Ecuadorian congressional committee approved a bill on Thursday that would set up a media watchdog group to ensure print and broadcast journalists produce “truthful, reasonable” stories.
The proposal is backed by lawmakers aligned with President Rafael Correa, who regularly criticizes local newspapers and TV stations that question his leftist policies. The bill now goes to Ecuador’s full 124-member Congress for debate.
According to the bill, the panel will aim to ensure that mass communication is “truthful, reasonable, in proper context and based on multiple sources.”
But the seven-member watchdog panel would not have the power to punish journalists who fall short of those standards. The president would appoint two committee members.
Backers of the proposal say it would help raise media standards. Others say it could pressure journalists to censor themselves before publishing.

Mourners bid farewell to popular SKorean actor (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET
A funeral ceremony was scheduled for Park Yong-ha, 33, who killed himself Wednesday in distress over career and family pressures, the latest in a string of high-profile suicides in the Asian country.
Park’s suicide stunned South Korea and neighboring Japan where he was one of the most popular South Korean celebrities. One of his fans was said to be Japan’s former first lady, Akie Abe.
About 100 wailing fans — mostly Japanese women in black mourning attire — stood outside a hospital and surrounded the hearse carrying Park’s coffin to a cremation site, briefly preventing it from departing. One tearful fan held up a T-shirt expressing love for the late actor. Another reached out to touch the vehicle.
Police have said Park had been under stress because he had to juggle management of his entertainment company and career while his father was fighting stomach cancer. The actor had been taking sleeping pills due to insomnia, police said, citing Park’s mother.
Park debuted in the late 1990s and starred in the 2002 television drama series “Winter Sonata,” which was also watched by fans in Japan and Southeast Asia. He held several concerts in Japan and released eight CDs there.
He was supposed to hold 12 concerts across Japan from July 2 to Aug. 22 and the tickets were sold out, according to Japanese record company Pony Canyon Inc.
South Korea has the highest suicide rate among the 30 nations in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Choi Jin-sil, one of South Korea’s most famous actresses, committed suicide two years ago. In March, her younger brother, Choi Jin-young, also an actor, killed himself in Seoul.
Former President Roh Moo-hyun jumped to his death in May last year while embroiled in a widening corruption scandal.

‘Friday Night Lights’ actor likes Facebook love (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET
Gilford plays Matt Saracen in the high school football drama that debuted in 2006. It airs first on DirectTV and later in the year on NBC.
So far, more than 8,600 people on the social networking site “like” the idea of Gilford getting an Emmy. Fans say they’re particularly impressed with his acting in a recent storyline where Saracen’s father was killed while serving in the military in Iraq.
Gilford, 28, who actually left the show in its current fourth season, says he appreciates the effort. He returns for a story arc in the show’s fifth and reported final season, which is now filming.
“It actually makes sense for him to show back up,” says Gilford of Saracen’s return to the show’s fictional town of Dillon, Texas. “It’s not just this kind of fluff, like, let’s find a way to bring characters back. I think he plays a pivotal role in what’s going on with some of the characters who are still around.”
Gilford says he doesn’t know why the show has never been a ratings success.
“I’ve never spoken to anyone whose watched the show and been like, ‘Yeah, I watched it once. Not really for me,’” he said. “It’s either, ‘Yeah, I’ve heard about it. I’ve never actually watched,’ or they’re, ‘Oh my God, it’s my favorite show I’ve ever seen’ and they freak out.”
The primetime Emmy nominations will be announced July 8.
