NOTTINGHAM (AFP) – England century-maker Ian Bell admitted he had been “naive” after a bizarre mix-up still ended with him leading his side into a commanding position against India in the second Test.

England, in their second innings, were 441 for six at the close of the third day at Trent Bridge on Sunday, giving them a lead of 374 runs.

Bell made a superb 159, but only after being run out when on 137 off the last ball before tea.

Hot Breaking News about Rural doctor shortage prompts opening of medical school Reuters

Hot Breaking News about Rural doctor shortage prompts opening of medical school (Reuters)

KANSAS CITY, Kan (Reuters) – A Kansas college hopes young doctors will be more willing to practice in small towns if they go to a medical school in a rural area.

The University of Kansas will have what it says is the smallest four-year medical education site in the country when eight students begin taking classes on Monday on a satellite campus in Salina, Kansas. The move is in response to a shortage of rural doctors in the United States.

“By training physicians in a nonmetropolitan area, we are showing young medical students that life can be good, and practice can be stimulating, outside of the big city,” said Dr. William Cathcart-Rake, the physician who directs the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Salina.

Hot Breaking News about U.S. military chief cites progress against Haqqanis (Reuters)

KABUL (Reuters) – The top U.S. military officer said Sunday Afghan militants of the anti-American Haqqani network were finding it harder to move into Afghanistan but warned that their safe havens in Pakistan still posed a risk to the decade-old war effort.

Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the U.S. military’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, travelled earlier in the day to eastern Afghanistan where Haqqani militants are attacking U.S. forces.

“The overall goal has been to make it much more difficult for the Haqqani network to penetrate directly in what has previously been called sort of this ‘jet stream’ between Pakistan, right through Khost (province) into Kabul,” Mullen told a news conference in the Afghan capital.

Hot Breaking News about Kings of Leon vow to redo ‘too hot’ Dallas show (AP)

NEW YORK – The Kings of Leon are promising to make it up to their Dallas fans after canceling a show because their lead singer complained it was too hot to perform.
In a statement, the band announced plans to return to Dallas on Sept. 21. This follows Friday’s mid-show cancellation, which Nathan Followill called a “fiasco” on Twitter.
Brother Caleb Followill told the audience it was too hot to sing. He announced he was going backstage to get a beer and would return. He never did.
His abrupt departure was blamed on heat exhaustion and dehydration.
The band also canceled Saturday’s show in Houston. That show was rescheduled for Sept. 22.
The Nashville-based rock band is known for hits including the Grammy-winning anthem “Use Somebody.”
