HONOLULU – Nicole Leszczynski couldn’t imagine that two chicken salad sandwiches would land her and her husband in jail and her 2-year-old daughter in state custody. But it happened five days ago, when the 30-weeks-pregnant woman forgot to pay for her snack while grocery shopping.

“It was the most ridiculous chain of events that happened,” she said while sobbing Monday. “It’s still hard to believe what happened.”

Leszczynski, 28, and her husband Marcin, 33, were handcuffed, searched then released on $ 50 bail each. Their ordeal at the police station lasted a few hours, but their daughter Zofia spent the night away from her parents in a case that has sparked nationwide outrage and forced the Safeway supermarket chain to review the incident.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – A 19-year-old U.S. amateur boxing champion was in critical condition on Monday, a day after he was injured in a multiple-car pile-up on a New York City expressway that killed his sister.

Pedro Luis Sosa, 19, and Jennifer Sosa, 20, were driving on the Cross Bronx Expressway in the early hours of Sunday morning, a day after an unseasonal snowstorm left roads icy, when their Chevy Venture was involved in a crash with several other vehicles, police said.

The pair had exited their car to inspect the damage when another car crashed into them, knocking them over the expressway's barrier onto the ground 75 feet below, police said.

(Reuters) – Three Albuquerque schools were under lockdown or were restricting student movements on Monday afternoon "due to a SWAT situation in the area," the Albuquerque Public Schools website said.

Garfield Middle School was on lockdown and Valley High School and Griegos Elementary School were under "shelter-in-place," which is similar to a lockdown except that students can move around inside their classrooms and can take supervised restroom breaks, the website said.

School officials were asking that parents of the middle and high school students avoid the area but said parents of elementary school students could pick their children up if they sign them out at the office.

PARIS (Reuters) – Efforts to coax China into throwing the euro zone a lifeline will dominate this week's G20 Summit and leave Beijing holding the cards as world leaders try to restore market confidence with pledges to reduce economic imbalances.

Heads of state and finance chiefs from the 20 leading economies want to use the November 3-4 meeting in Cannes, France, to send a message that Europe has its debt crisis under control and any risks to the world economy are being taken care of.

Yet simmering tensions, which flared up at recent talks in Brussels and Paris, and bleak economic prospects may make it harder to stage a convincing show of unity than in 2008, when the G20 pulled together to fix the financial crisis.
