Dell on Tuesday announced launch plans for its Android-based Dell Streak handheld tablet


, while also confirming that the device will get an upgrade to the Flash-capable Android 2.2


later this year. The Streak will launch in the U.K. in early June and the U.S. later this summer, but the company did not provide specific launch dates for either country’s launch. No pricing or U.S. carrier details were announced.

Dell first introduced the Streak in January


during the Consumer Electronics Show; since then, specs for the device have been made public through a combination of company statements and periodic leaks to gadget blogs

The Dell Streak Will Flash

As expected, the Dell Streak will have a 5-inch WVGA touchscreen, Qualcomm’s 1-GHz Snapdragon Processor, 2 GB internal storage, maximum 32GB of external SD storage, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, and a front-facing camera for video chat. The Streak will also have 3G, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity.

Looks like 2010 will be remembered as the year of the tablets. If it was the Cruncpad AKA the JooJoo that hogged headlines in the beginning of 2010, it was soon overshadowed by the mighty iPad from Apple. If that wasn’t all, there was the Adam from Notion Ink that had the specs to beat the crap out of the iPad – at least on the specs front. Barely months after the iPad became available, PC manufacturer Dell has announced the launch of its own tablet, the Streak, across Europe.

While the JooJoo, the Adam and the iPad are fairly large devices, the Streak is quite smaller. In fact, with a 5 inch screen, it is slightly larger than the largest smartphone but a lot smaller than a full fledged tablet. Dell here seems to be targeting people who would want a large display for their needs – but a device that doesn’t require another briefcase to carry it around with them. Intelligent?

The specs of the Streak is more smartphone like. Let’s see what it offers you, the user. The most striking part of the tablet is its large 5-inch display. This is humongous by smartphone standards. Even the “mighty” HTC HD2 has a smaller 4.3 inch screen. What is more interesting is that the Streak is actually a phone that can make and receive calls.  The  screen is capacitive in nature and is multi-touch capable as well. It boasts of an ultra crisp WVGA (800×480) resolution that should suffice for a great full-screen experience watching video or browsing the web.
