CHICAGO – Finally, something for those guys who say they read Playboy for the articles: a chance to prove it.

Playboy Enterprises Inc. launched a website Tuesday that it swears will be safe to browse while at work, eliminating the need for men to throw themselves over their computer screen when the boss walks by.

TheSmokingJacket.com will contain none of the nudity that makes Playboy.com NSFW — not suitable for work. Instead, it’ll rely on humor to reach Playboy’s target audience, men 25 to 34 years old, when they are most likely to be in front of a computer screen.

“A lot of our audience logs on (to Playboy.com) after work and we saw that we were missing a golden opportunity to reach guys when they’re online the most: when they’re sitting at their desk, not working, sending e-mails to their friends,” said Jimmy Jellinek, Playboy’s editorial director.

The site, named after one of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s favorite pieces of clothing (silkpajamas.com was taken), won’t include the long interviews or in-depth articles found in Playboy.

Instead, it’s meant to be decidedly un-serious. Or, in the parlance of its audience, ROFL — rolling on the floor, laughing. And cool, “basically a juke box of cool,” said Jellinek.

BEIJING – China has ordered food safety officials nationwide to step up the fight against “gutter oil” that is illegally skimmed from kitchen waste and resold, part of a government crackdown on foods tainted with potentially lethal substances.

China’s Cabinet, the State Council, said the black market trade in waste oil posed “serious potential food safety risks” to the public.

The circular issued by the council Monday did not specify the health risks but the China Daily newspaper reported Tuesday that reused oil could contain dangerous substances such as aflatoxin, a mold that can cause cancer.

The State Council said the intensified crackdown should target edible oil trade fairs and wholesale markets. It called for inspections of oil being used at restaurants, school cafeterias, work canteens and kitchens at construction sites across the country.

“Recycling oil is something that has been done in all families, but the more the oil is cooked the more it will contain some residues of food and all these carcinogenic particles,” said Marie-Paule Benassi, a food safety official with the European Union’s delegation in China.

HAGATNA, Guam – Authorities in the U.S. territory of Guam have turned away a ship after thousands of spiders overflowed from its cargo.

The Guam Department of Agriculture said hundreds of large spiders and thousands of smaller ones were seen when stevedores began offloading insulation and beams for housing units from the ship, the M.V. Altavia.

The cargo was returned to the ship, and the Agriculture Department on Friday ordered that the ship not be allowed to dock. It was last ported in South Korea.

“When you get this many from this many various sizes, it’s definitely an infestation,” said Department of Agriculture Director Joseph Torres.

Agriculture officials said they didn’t know what type of spiders were on the ship. But they said it’s a type that is not normally found on Guam and there was concern the spiders could damage the island’s environment.

“It’s not on Guam,” Torres said. “We don’t want it here.”

NEW ORLEANS – BP’s broken well was leaking oil and gas again Monday for the first time since the company capped it last week, but the Obama administration’s spill chief said it was no cause for alarm. The stopper was left in plac for now.

Ever since the cap was used to bottle up the oil last week, engineers have been watching underwater cameras and monitoring pressure and seismic readings to see whether the well would hold or spring a new leak, perhaps one that could rupture the seafloor and make the disaster even worse.

Small amounts of oil and gas started coming from the cap late Sunday, but “we do not believe it is consequential at this time,” retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen said.

Also, seepage from the seafloor was detected over the weekend less than two miles away, but Allen said it probably has nothing to do with the well. Oil and gas are known to ooze naturally from fissures in the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.

At an afternoon briefing in Washington, Allen said BP could keep the cap closed at least another 24 hours, as long as the company remained alert for leaks.

NEW YORK – Authorities say an emergency medical technician accused of refusing to help a dying pregnant woman during his coffee break was fatally shot near a New York City nightclub.

Police believe those accusations and the shooting were unrelated.

Police say Jason Green was shot in the face near the Greenhouse club Sunday morning. There have been no arrests.

Green and fellow EMT Melisa Jackson had been under criminal investigation for their handling of a distressed woman at a Brooklyn bakery Dec. 9. They were in line at the bakery when 25-year-old Eutisha Rennix collapsed.

Witnesses say the EMTs told workers to call 911 and left without helping the woman, whose prematurely born baby also died.
