Hot Breaking News about Life Behind China’s Great Firewall (Time.com)

The e-mail appeared to come from me. It began with something I’d previously written. Then the font changed and the English degenerated. “Attched [sic] is I want to know and discuss the issues,” said the note to the new leader of the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, India. Lobsang Sangay was savvy enough to figure out that neither the message nor an attachment in Chinese were really from me. The Tibetan PM wanted to let me know that someone had hacked my work e-mail account and pressed “reply.” But before he began composing a warning, he saw that the reply was not being automatically routed to me. Instead, the “to” field bore the e-mail address of the private secretary of Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. It looked as though my e-mail was designed to spread virally to other users and cause maximum confusion.

We are all alert to the perils of online communication, of suspicious financial requests from supposed Nigerian bankers or friends who have apparently lost their wallets in remote capitals. But people in China have an especially fraught relationship with the Internet. It’s not just that the Great Firewall of China limits access to sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or Blogspot. More disquieting is the realization that every word typed may be under surveillance and every e-mail or post prone to infiltration. Yes, snooping happens in Western countries too. But China has tens of thousands of trained monitors. The nation’s tech companies employ huge teams to comb their servers and delete any material the government deems unfit for public eyes. (See pictures of China stamping out democracy protests.)

Then there’s the overt meddling. I’m one of many foreign journalists in China who have had their e-mail accounts hacked. Some have found that all their messages were being auto-forwarded to mysterious e-mail addresses. Who is doing this? I can’t say for sure. But Google has accused hackers in China of breaking into Gmail. In August, the world’s biggest security-technology company, McAfee, released details of Operation Shady RAT, a five-year infiltration of around 70 large computer networks, including those belonging to the U.S. and Taiwan governments, the International Olympic Committee and the Associated Press. Cybersecurity experts speculated that no power but China would be interested in those targets. Beijing dismissed the allegation.

Hot Breaking News about Analysis: Wall St action part of global “Arab Spring?” (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) – After the "Arab Spring" and unrest in Europe, New York's "Occupy Wall Street" movement may be the latest sign of a global, popular backlash against elites with increasingly shared rhetoric and tactics.

On almost every continent, 2011 has seen an almost unprecedented rise in both peaceful and sometimes violent unrest and dissent. Protesters in a lengthening list of countries including Israel, India, Chile, China, Britain, Spain and now the United States all increasingly link their actions explicitly to the popular revolutions that have shaken up the Middle East.

The slogans on the streets of Manhattan and other U.S. cities also show a host of other intermingling influences, from the British student protests last year to the "indignados" (indignant) anti-austerity demonstrations in Greece and Spain.

Hot Breaking News about Limits on supplemental Medicare plans eyed (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Medicare supplemental health plans, popular among politically powerful retirees, could come under the budget knife being wielded by the special deficit-reduction panel of Congress, according to sources keeping close watch on its work.

The so-called "Medigap" insurance plans shield the elderly — many living on fixed incomes — from costly deductibles and other expenses not covered by the traditional fee-for-service Medicare healthcare program.

"This one is clearly on the table," said a lobbyist who has been following "super committee" deliberations on ways to trim federal budget deficits by at least $1.2 trillion over 10 years.

Hot Breaking News about Unemployed seek protection against job bias (AP)

WASHINGTON – After two years on the unemployment rolls, Selena Forte thought she’d found a temporary job at FedEx that matched her qualifications.

But Forte, a 55-year-old from Cleveland, says a job recruiter for a temporary agency told her the company wouldn’t consider her because she had been out of work too long. She had lost her job driving a bus.

“They didn’t even want to hear about my experience,” said Forte. “It didn’t make sense. You’re always told just go out there and get a job.”

Yemenis shrug off Saleh’s talk of stepping down (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Yemenis shrug off Saleh’s talk of stepping down (Reuters)

SANAA (Reuters) – Yemeni protesters camped out in Sanaa's central square said on Sunday that President Ali Abdullah Saleh's suggestion that he would step down in the coming days was another promise that they were sure would be broken.

Analysts mostly agree that the vow, made three times already this year by Yemen's long-time ruler, was a stalling tactic in a succession crisis that has spread turmoil through the country.

A government official said Saleh was merely indicating readiness in a speech on Saturday night to reach a deal to end months of popular unrest.

"Saleh is a liar, nothing has changed since his speech," said Mohammed al-Asl, a protest organizer. "We're used to this type of thing now. He just says anything to fool his own people, the world, and everyone. We're not paying any attention to this."

Protesters, camped out in tents in the area in Sanna now dubbed as "Change Square" were going about their usual business of buying food, cooking and chewing wads of qat, a popular mild leaf stimulant common in Yemen.
