SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Josefina Miranda doesn’t need scientific studies to tell her about the dangers of pesticide exposure. She knows them all too well.

On a Thursday morning in 1995, the four-months pregnant farmworker spent several hours working in a field in the small Central Valley town of Earlimart — a site she remembers as being so soaked with pesticides “it was like it had been raining.”

Two days later, she had a miscarriage.

Miranda, now 38 and still working the fields, said the doctor at the hospital told her the pesticides were not to blame for her miscarriage because she didn’t ingest any chemicals. But she believes otherwise. Other farmworkers from the same field also fell ill, she said, but they were too afraid to report their symptoms or seek medical attention.

Miranda and the rest of California‘s 700,000 farmworkers may soon receive greater protection under a proposed expansion of the state’s nationally renowned pesticide safety program.

A bill moving through the state Assembly would require laboratories that test for pesticide poisoning to report their data to the California Department of Pesticide Regulation. Currently, labs only report test results to patients’ physicians, not to any state agency.

Hot Breaking News about Britain names Chagos Islands worlds largest marine preserve The Christian Science Monitor

A patch of ocean roughly the size of Texas and harboring some of the world’s most pristine coral reefs has received tough new protection from the British government.

The 210,000 square-mile area, which embraces the Indian Ocean‘s Chagos Island archipelago, now represents the world’s single largest marine protected area trumping the previous record marine-conservation set-asides. President George W. Bush approved the establishment of national marine monuments around the northern Hawaiian Islands in 2006 and along the Marianas Islands in 2009.

Taken together, the areas Britain and the US have designated for protection represent nearly half a million square miles of unique ocean ecosystems that serve as nurseries for a broad range of marine life.

Britain’s declaration “is a historic victory for marine conservation,” says Jay Nelson, director of the Pew Environment Group’s Global Ocean Legacy project. Part of the area will be a “no take” reserve, meaning no fishing or collecting of living things at all, while human activities will be strictly regulated in the rest of the larger protected area.

These moves, along with the Coral Triangle initiative in the tropical western Pacific, highlight the increasing emphasis scientists, conservationists, and governments are placing on trying to protect ocean ecosystems critical to the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people as well as to the biological diversity of the oceans themselves.

Fox, ABC series ramp up product promotion (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Fox ABC series ramp up product promotion Reuters
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) –
Three instances of product promotion had television viewers buzzing this week as shows on networks ABC and Fox took integration to new levels.

ABC on Wednesday night plastered one of the final episodes of “Lost” with a near ever-present countdown clock for the return of alien-invasion drama “V,” Fox’s “American Idol” on Thursday opened with stunt promoting “Clash of the Titans,” and ABC’s “Modern Family” devoted most of its Wednesday episode to the glories of Apple Inc’s new iPad.

Each instance was the result of a unique motivation from the network or creators, but all three resulted in the same effect: fans talking about a show…yet not talking about the show.

“Idol” is no stranger to product placement, and its viewers have come to expect a certain level of product promotion. But Thursday’s effort arguably was the most jarring placement on the show since Mike Myers’ “Love Guru” character graced the “Idol” stage.

Actors from Warner Bros.’ “Clash” appeared from the London premiere via satellite on the singing competition, with clips from the movie being spliced together with scenes from “Idol.”

Sarah Palin special airs after interview disputes (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Sarah Palin special airs after interview disputes AP
NEW YORK – After an uproar by two big-name subjects of canned interviews, Sarah Palin’s first TV special aired Thursday on Fox News Channel.
During “Real American Stories,” the former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate narrated heart-tugging profiles of Americans overcoming adversity and helping others.
“Heroism, courage, generosity and a warrior spirit — these are things that unite all Americans,” said Palin, clad in a bright red blazer, at the top of the hour.
Stories included that of George Weiss, a wealthy businessman who helps prepare underprivileged students for college and pays for their education.
After the profile, Palin introduced her studio audience to a group of grade-school students being helped by Weiss’ Say Yes to Education Foundation.
“There’s such power in this idea of the voluntary private-sector contribution that George and others now are making,” Palin said.
Other stories told of Jason Dunham, a heroic Marine who gave his life to save his comrades in Iraq, and by Cole Massie, a child with cerebral palsy who was inspired to walk by his service dog.
Palin welcomed Cole, his parents and, of course, the beloved dog for a follow-up studio interview.
“I don’t know what my next goal is,” Cole told her. “With this dog … the sky is the limit.”
But earlier in the week, actor-singer LL Cool J had complained when he learned about Fox News’ plans to use an interview in the show he said he gave to another outlet two years ago. The network consented to drop his segment.
Country singer Toby Keith did appear, as announced, in footage focused on his hit song, “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.” But on Wednesday Keith’s publicist had said he was similarly caught by surprise on discovering that his year-old interview had been included in the program.
It is unclear when or if Palin will host future editions of “Real American Stories.”
She joined Fox News as a regular contributor in January, but she’ll be seen on TV elsewhere. The TLC network recently announced “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” an eight-part series about Palin’s home state that is set to start production this summer.
