Afghan leader meets US commander amid tensions (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Afghan leader meets US commander amid tensions AP

KABUL – Afghan President Hamid Karzai joined the commander of U.S. forces in a meeting with tribal leaders Sunday in the volatile south, amid tensions over Karzai’s recent scathing accusations of foreign interference in last year’s elections.

Karzai and Gen. Stanley McChrystal flew together to the southern city of Kandahar, deep in the heartland of the Taliban insurgency, and were to meet with scores of tribal elders as part of efforts to build political support ahead of an expected U.S. and NATO push into the area.

Most of the 30,000 new troops promised by President Barack Obama will be headed to Kandahar city and the surrounding province.

Security was extremely tight as Karzai and McChrystal flew into the city center in a U.S. military helicopter for the tribal conference, known as a shura, at the governor’s compound.

Also present at the meetings was the president’s younger brother, a key source of support in the south, despite having been publicly accused of being a major drug lord — part of the corruption and cronyism that undermines support for the government and drives Afghans to the Taliban. He denies any involvement in drugs.

Chris Kanyon dead at 40 – CANOE – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Chris Kanyon dead at 40 CANOE

An overdose of pills at his apartment has claimed the life of Chris Kanyon (Chris Klucsaritis), who also wrestled in an elaborate gimmick as Mortis. He was 40 years old.

Klucsaritis was found in his apartment in Queens, NY, on Friday night. His death is believed to be a suicide. He had admitted that he suffered from bipolar disorder and had apparently battled with suicidal thoughts in the past, including an admitted sleeping pill overdose in 2003.

At age six, Klucsaritis was into pro wrestling, and by age 12, the Queens, NY, native had decided he would become a professional wrestler. In college, he studied physical therapy, and he became a well-paid physical therapist. But the lure of wrestling continued, and, in 1992, he gave up the well paying career to work for $40 a night in Memphis. He trained in New York City with Bobby Bold Eagle, and in Columbia, SC, with The Fabulous Moolah (Lillian Ellison).

In his early days, he was a tag team wrestler with Mark Starr, known as Men at Work, in World Championship Wrestling.

For most, Klucsaritis first came to everyone’s attention as Mortis in mid-1997, a rough take on characters from the Mortal Kombat video game.

Air Force to launch robotic winged space plane (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Air Force to launch robotic winged space plane AP

LOS ANGELES – After a decade of development, the Air Force this month plans to launch a robotic spacecraft resembling a small space shuttle to conduct technology tests in orbit and then glide home to a California runway.

The ultimate purpose of the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle and details about the craft, which has been passed between several government agencies, however, remain a mystery as it is prepared for launch April 19 from Cape Canaveral, Fla.

“As long as you’re confused you’re in good shape,” said defense analyst John Pike, director of Globalsecurity.org. “I looked into this a couple of years ago — the entire sort of hypersonic, suborbital, scramjet nest of programs — of which there are upwards of a dozen. The more I studied it the less I understood it.”

The quietly scheduled launch culminates the project’s long and expensive journey from NASA to the Pentagon’s research and development arm and then to a secretive Air Force unit.

Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on the X-37 program, but the current total has not been released.

IMAX puts 3D spin on science films with "Hubble 3D" (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about IMAX puts 3D spin on science films with Hubble 3D Reuters
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) –
IMAX has returned to outer space with the movie “IMAX: Hubble 3D,” a documentary that harks back to IMAX’s roots in science films, but spins into a 3D, Hollywood orbit.

In recent years, the company known for giant-screen films has carved out a valuable business boosting the size of big-budget studio movies like “Avatar” and “How to Train Your Dragon” to suit larger screens, both in 2D and 3D. With its newest effort, however, IMAX returns to its role of offering large-format science films, albeit this time in trendy 3D.

“IMAX: Hubble 3D” documents the May 2009 space shuttle mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. To capture that footage, a crew of IMAX veterans relied on astronauts to be filmmakers. It was a challenging collaboration led by director Toni Myers and her IMAX crew, teaming with seven astronauts, a NASA support team, one giant camera, space shuttle Atlantis and the galaxy’s most famous telescope.

The documentary debuted two weeks ago in IMAX science center theaters in the United States, and by August it will also be playing on IMAX multiplex screens. It has earned mostly strong reviews, with an overall 80 percent positive rating on review website RottenTomatoes.com.

The 43-minute film arrives as IMAX has boosted both its brand name and its bottom line by showing Hollywood movies in refurbished traditional multiplexes. In 2009, IMAX reported net income of 5 million on total revenue of $171 million, up from a net loss of $34 million on sales of $102 million a year earlier. IMAX’s stock has risen roughly fourfold since.

NASA clears Discovery for Monday morning launch (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about NASA clears Discovery for Monday morning launch AP

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – NASA has cleared space shuttle Discovery for a Monday morning launch to the International Space Station.

Mission managers met Saturday and gave the “go” to proceed toward liftoff. The unanimous decision came after engineers determined there were no booster rocket safety concerns. Two booster problems recently cropped up when the parts were tested off-site.

Forecasters expect an 80 percent chance of good launch weather. Liftoff is scheduled for 6:21 a.m., shortly before sunrise.

Discovery is loaded with spare parts and science experiments for the space station. Only four shuttle flights remain. President Barack Obama will visit the Cape Canaveral area April 15 — while Discovery is in orbit — to elaborate on his post-shuttle plans.
