Merkel at Afghan deaths memorial for first time (AFP) – NIMBRUNG.NET
BERLIN (AFP) –
Chancellor Angela Merkel defended on Friday Germany’s Afghanistan mission at a memorial service for the latest three German soldiers killed there, the first post-WWII leader to attend such an event.
“Our troops perform their service and fight in Afghanistan because we want to prevent terrorists attacking us here in Germany as well,” Merkel said at the ceremony in a small church near the soldiers’ barracks in northwest Germany.
“Our mission in Afghanistan is tough,” she said. “But we cannot just absolve ourselves of our political responsibility for a stable Afghanistan from one day to the next, and just leave.”
With the unpopular mission turning increasingly violent, Merkel flew back from a holiday early to pay her respects at the ceremony. After speaking, she bowed her head at the three coffins in turn, each draped in a German flag.
The deaths in a Taliban ambush of Nils Bruns, 35, Robert Hartert, 25, and Martin Augustyniak, 28, in northern Afghanistan on April 2 brought to 39 the number of German military personnel to have died there since 2002.

Review: Carell, Fey go out on a bad ‘Date Night’ (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET
These are two of the funniest people ever on television, yet their big-screen “Date Night” is a dreary, uninspired waste of their talents — and those of the top-name cast inexplicably appearing in small throwaway roles.
The movie manages the barest glimmers of the droll humor of Carell’s “The Office” and the snappy wit of Fey’s “30 Rock,” and those few moments underscore how barren “Date Night” is the rest of the time.
Carell and Fey have an easy, affectionate rapport as run-down parents looking to renew some romantic sparks with a night out in Manhattan to break their boring routine.
The actors try hard to make it work, but the lowbrow sensibilities of director Shawn Levy (the “Night at the Museum” movies, “Cheaper by the Dozen”) leave them tottering through painful verbal exchanges, lame stunts and other dreadfully unfunny hijinks (their pole dance at a strip club is just embarrassing, and like so many of the movie’s gags, it drags on a long time).
The sketchy premise in screenwriter Josh Klausner’s script casts Carell and Fey as Phil and Claire Foster, tired, ordinary but reasonably content with their cozy New Jersey life with their two kids. Once a week, Phil and Claire have a “date night” — dinner and the same old table talk at the same old local restaurant.
After two of their friends (Mark Ruffalo and Kristen Wiig) announce they’re splitting up, the Fosters decide they need a marital booster and head to the city. Swiping a no-show couple’s dinner reservation at a trendy Manhattan restaurant, the Fosters are mistaken for blackmailers who stole a flash-drive with incriminating information about some very dangerous criminal types.
Date night turns into a night on the run for Phil and Claire, who cross paths with a mobster (Ray Liotta), a security expert (Mark Wahlberg), a devoted cop (Taraji P. Henson), a drug dealer and his stripper girlfriend (James Franco and Mila Kunis) and two relentless thugs (Common and Jimmi Simpson).
The filmmakers give these extra hands nothing remotely interesting or amusing to do (ongoing gags about Wahlberg’s shirtlessness are so repetitive they become exasperating).
Ruffalo’s character says his marriage has become so humdrum that he and his soon-to-be-ex are nothing more than “excellent roommates.” That kind of sums up the dynamic between Fey and Carell, a couple of troupers who do try to deliver their drowsy lines as if they were saying funny stuff.
But like Phil and Claire, they are going through the motions, pretending they’re in a good comedy in hopes of keeping it from falling apart.
It falls apart, anyway. Clearly, things have gone wrong when the outtakes pasted over the end credits cannot even provoke a chuckle.
Skip this “Date Night.” Put the money toward your own night out at a fancy restaurant. Call ahead for a reservation first.
“Date Night,” a 20th Century Fox release, is rated PG-13 for sexual and crude content throughout, language, some violence and a drug reference. Running time: 88 minutes. One and a half stars out of four.

"Modern Family" cast strategizes Emmy submissions (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET
The age-old Emmy question of how to deal with an ensemble is coming to a head on ABC’s rookie hit “Modern Family,” where the cast is nearing a decision on who (if anyone) will be submitted as a lead actor and who will compete for supporting.
With the April 30 deadline approaching, sources say four separate scenarios are being mulled: either all six adult regulars (Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara and Eric Stonestreet) will compete as leads; all will go supporting; everyone will go supporting except O’Neill, who, as the only major pre-”Family” star, could separate himself as lead; or Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen, as the show’s “traditional” parents, will go lead and the rest supporting.
A tough choice, and recent Emmy history offers little guidance. “Friends” is perhaps the last true ensemble comedy to break out like “Modern Family” has. That cast was initially nominated only in the supporting category (Lisa Kudrow and David Schwimmer, with Kudrow winning in 1998) but in 2002 co-stars Matthew Perry and Matt LeBlanc squared off in lead — both were nominated but neither won (Ray Romano did). Perry then stepped back to supporting, while LeBlanc stayed in lead — and still, neither won.
Nevertheless, when fellow “Friends” co-star Jennifer Aniston moved to lead in 2002, she brought home the trophy. Even if the “Modern Family” cast opts to run against each other, multiple nominations and even a win are possible. In 2005, “Desperate Housewives” scored three lead actress (comedy) nominees (Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman) and Huffman ended up winning.
Same goes for supporting. In 2002, “The West Wing” fielded four of the six contenders in supporting actor (drama) — and John Spencer won for the show. In 2004, “Sex and the City” fielded three of the five names in supporting actress (comedy) — and Cynthia Nixon won for the show. Between 2002-05 “Everybody Loves Raymond” co-stars Peter Boyle and Brad Garrett paired up in the supporting actor (comedy) lineup — and Garrett won three of the four times.

Michelle Obama and the Americanization of the Britain general election (The Christian Science Monitor) – NIMBRUNG.NET
London –
Michelle Obama’s popularity hasn’t gone unnoticed by British political spin-doctors. Well before Prime Minister Gordon Brown fired the starting gun Tuesday for the Britain general election campaign, the wives of both the Labour and Conservative leaders had been playing increasingly important roles designed to enhance their partners’ appeal to voters. The unprecedented importance of political spouses – Tory leader David Cameron calls his wife Samantha his “secret weapon” – is just one of the ways in which the campaign resembles a US presidential election like none before.
Like a political version of the WWII film The Americanization of Emily, in which a roguish James Garner plies English rose Julie Andrews with pilfered US chocolate and nylons, Britain’s politicians are reaching across the Atlantic to woo voters. Tactics and strategies include the use of Obama-style Internet campaigning to harness grassroots activists, negative campaigning offensives which target specific personalities, US-style presidential debates — and political consultants on both sides who assisted the successful 2008 Obama campaign. The focus on personalities demonstrates how British general elections have started to resemble presidential-style races rather than battles between competing power blocs, even though there is clear blue water between both of the main parties on economic issues in this campaign. Why the change? UK voters want it that way. “This is the first election where the individual leaders have actually been as high as the policies in terms of priorities identified by voters,” says Roger Mortimore, Head of Political Research at pollsters Ipsos MORI.
Charisma mattersNo surprise then that the Tories have been hammering away at Brown, as woefully lacking the charisma and communication skills of his predecessor, Tony Blair. Mr. Brown’s wife, Sarah, has been playing a key role in efforts to humanize the Labour Party leader’s often distant and dour image, introducing him at last year’s Labour Party conference as “My husband, my hero.” Formerly a formidable public relations executive who chose to focus on her family and charity work after marrying Brown, her public profile has grown over the past year while her one million plus followers on the social networking site Twitter amount to six times the membership of the Labour party. Conservative activists are hoping that her success can be emulated by Samantha Cameron, the creative director of a luxury goods company and blue-blooded descendant of King Charles II. The postures, pronouncements and – most of all the clothes – worn by both women have become permanent daily fixtures of press coverage, something which both Cameron and Brown seem to be in no hurry to stop. Why? The answer may be the crucial importance all parties are attaching to female voters, a demographic who favored Labour in the past two elections but who currently back the Conservatives in polls by 37 points to 29.
Soccer ‘mums’?The US-experience has been influential in this regard according to Sarah Lapham, a Texas-born public relations consultant now living in London. “Many people believe it was a soccer mum vote which pushed Obama over the edge to win the US election, and it’s also a factor here,” she adds. Sam Baker, editor-in-chief of Red Magazine, one of Britain’s leading women’s magazines, agrees that the influence of Michelle Obama has been a factor in the current election campaign, but adds that attempts to specifically target the votes of women have been a fixture of British politics since at least the mid 90s.
Then, “Worcester Woman” became shorthand for a type of middle-class female voter that Labour needed to win over to capture formerly solid Tory seats. “It is true to say though that ever since Blair, campaigns have become a lot more presidential in style and much more about personality,” says Ms. Baker. Similarities to last year’s US election meanwhile also extend to cyberspace. In particular, Labour has invested heavily in strategies to help party members access databases that allow them to contact voters and build relationships. “Historically Labour has used technology as a form of control,” Douglas Alexander, the party’s election co-coordinator told the Guardian in February. “We would use pagers and faxes to send out messages telling people what line to take. The key learning from the Obama campaign is to use technology to empower your supporters.” According to Ms. Lapham, the PR executive, the ways in which both of the main parties have deployed new social media mirrors the way they are approaching the campaign as a whole. While Labour’s approach has been more “issue specific,” the Conservatives have sought to capitalize on the popularity of their leader through “Webcameron,” a video blog which has featured him talking to voters while being filmed doing chores at home in the family kitchen. Next week will see the advent of Britain’s most conspicuous import from American elections – televised debates.

New evidence on WWII mystery of Raoul Wallenberg (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET
STOCKHOLM – New evidence from Russian archives suggests Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, credited with rescuing tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust, was alive after Soviets reported that he had died in a Moscow prison, a Swedish magazine and U.S. researchers reported Thursday.
The fate of Wallenberg, who was arrested in Budapest in January 1945 by the Soviet army, has remained one of the great mysteries of World War II.
The Soviets claimed he was executed July 17, 1947 but never produced a reliable death certificate or his remains. Witnesses claim he was seen in Soviet prisons or labor camps many years later, although those accounts were never verified.
Now, the archives of the Russian Security Services say a man identified only as Prisoner No. 7, who was interrogated six days after the diplomat’s reported death, was “with great likelihood” Wallenberg.
The security services reported the find last November to Susanne Berger and Vadim Birstein, two members of a research team that conducted a 10-year investigation into Wallenberg’s disappearance in the 1990s.
