5 best mind-trip movies (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about 5 best mind trip movies AP
LOS ANGELES – “Inception” is about dreams, and dreams within dreams. It’s about plundering the subconscious for secrets and, perhaps, planting a few ideas there, as well.
But writer-director Christopher Nolan has done so much more than just recreate the sensation of what happens when we fall asleep. He’s built a complete and complicated world, one that constantly shakes you up and makes you work — makes you stop every once in a while to find your bearings. In a good way.
It’s the most superbly crafted mind trip, and it follows a great tradition of challenging, innovative films.
We’re not talking about movies with a twist like, oh, Bruce Willis is actually dead or Edward Norton and Brad Pitt are really the same person or Jaye Davidson has a penis. That’s a whole ‘nother discussion for another time. No, these are films that ask you to free your mind, and the rest will follow. Hopefully.
• “The Matrix” (1999): The first one, that is, and not the inferior, back-to-back sequels. This clearly influenced Nolan, with its depiction of an alternate reality in which characters can drop in together and interact with each other — a place where the usual rules of time and space don’t apply. This futuristic action thriller was just hugely cool and, in retrospect, so influential, from the “bullet time” effect to the bold, S&M-style wardrobe aesthetic. Despite drawing from various religious and mystical sources, the Wachowski Brothers truly created their own original world here.
• “Mulholland Dr.” (2001): It could all be a dream. That’s one way to interpret it. David Lynch will never tell you what his movie is about, of course, and that’s what makes him — and his work — simultaneously intriguing and maddening. Disarming visuals, shocking imagery, cryptic proclamations — they’re all there, and they require repeated viewing, and even then “Mulholland Dr.” may not make sense. Here’s what’s certain: Naomi Watts gave a star-making performance in two different roles in this Hollywood mystery, and a haunting feeling will linger with you long afterward.
• “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968): Vintage Stanley Kubrick: visually striking, mentally baffling, artistically unlike anything else. The questions it raises may never be answered, and that’s part of the film’s beauty. This much we know: There’s a monolith, and HAL 9000 won’t open the pod bay doors for Dave, but he will sing “Daisy.” Still, it’s duly one of the most influential sci-fi movies ever made — at once enormous and intimate, balletic and even melancholy. As a bold piece of filmmaking, it’s very much of its time, yet it still grabs hold of its audience just as ferociously as ever today.
• “Being John Malkovich” (1999): Really, you could list any movie Charlie Kaufman’s written here. Many would choose the wistful “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” with its vivid, dreamlike imagery. Others love the sprawling, existential “Synecdoche, New York.” But this was Kaufman’s first, and it’s my favorite of his. Merely the idea of entering a portal that takes you inside Malkovich’s mind is inspired in itself. It’s where Kaufman and director Spike Jonze go with this concept — an absurd exploration of love and identity — that makes this movie so irresistible and strangely sweet.
• “Memento” (2000): And now we’re back to Nolan again, and the movie that put him on the map. With its screenplay-in-reverse (which Nolan co-wrote with brother Jonathan), this was an early indicator of the kind of intricate, intelligent puzzle-building that would become one of Nolan’s trademarks. Like “Inception,” “Memento” makes you work. But watching it unfold is a thrill as Guy Pearce pieces together his past through notes and tattoos to hunt down his wife’s killer. You could analyze it to death to see if it holds together (it does) or you could just go with it and enjoy having him toy with you.

Cuba frees 7 political prisoners into exile (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Cuba frees 7 political prisoners into exile AP

HAVANA – Cuban authorities freed seven political prisoners on Monday and put them and their families on a flight to Spain where they will live in exile — the start of a promised mass liberation of dissidents that once seemed unthinkable.

Omar Ruiz, who had been serving a 12-year sentence for treason, said he and six other former inmates were driven in a van to Havana’s Jose Marti International airport, where they were reunited with relatives in a special waiting room.

All were then escorted to an Air Europa flight bound for Madrid.

“We are, at this moment, walking to the plane,” Ruiz told The Associated Press on his cell phone. “They brought us through the back of the airport.”

The government of Raul Castro has pledged to free 52 Cubans who international human rights group say were jailed for their political beliefs. That process is expected to take three or four months and is part of a landmark deal last week between Cuban authorities and the island’s Roman Catholic Church that was brokered by Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos.

Spy suspects allegedly used regular consumer tech (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Spy suspects allegedly used regular consumer tech AP

NEW YORK – Before James Bond heads out on a mission, he has to stop in Q’s laboratory for custom-made gadgets like an exploding watch. Life wasn’t so dashing for the suspected Russian spies arrested this week: They allegedly relied heavily on off-the-shelf consumer electronics.

“In the old days, they’d have special KGB-type equipment. Now they use normal computers, normal laptops,” said Sujeet Shenoi, professor of computer science at the University of Tulsa and a frequent consultant to the FBI. “Technology is so powerful now that you don’t have to have special-purpose equipment anymore.”

According to the FBI’s complaints that sought the arrest of the 11 suspects, the array of tools included laptops, flash memory cards and at least one prepaid cell phone. The suspects are accused of backing that up with old-fashioned spy technology like short-wave radios, invisible ink, and a classic, manual encryption method known as a “one-time pad.”

Short-wave radios were once relatively common in homes. Today, they’re a bit of a giveaway if the FBI already suspects you’re a spy. Not so with laptops, cell phones or flash drives. But that doesn’t mean spies can feel safe. The way the Russian suspects used these gadgets was revealing to FBI agents who followed them for years.

The use of “spy-fi” is a case in point.

"Silvery boa" museum brings contemporary art to Rome (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Silvery boa museum brings contemporary art to Rome Reuters
ROME (Reuters) –
It took Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid 11 years, 150 million euros and six Italian culture ministers to build Rome’s first state museum for contemporary art — one of the few futuristic spaces to rise in the ancient city.

“Every time there was an election and I had to come here to meet the new minister, my heart dropped and I nearly panicked,” Hadid recalled as she finally inaugurated the MAXXI — the Museum of Art for the XXI Century, her biggest project to date.

“When I first came to Rome as a child in the 1960s and posed for pictures in front of the Trevi fountain, I never thought I would be here today.”

The coiled, concrete 27,000 square meter structure — dubbed “the silvery boa” — houses two museums, MAXXI Art and MAXXI Architecture, as well as spaces for live performances.

Its collection contains around 300 works by the likes of Alighiero Boetti, Anish Kapoor, Anselm Kiefer and Andy Warhol as well as designs by 20th-century architects and engineers.

Vanessa Williams turns "Desperate" for ABC (Reuters) – NIMBRUNG.NET

Hot Breaking News about Vanessa Williams turns Desperate for ABC Reuters
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) –
Actress Vanessa Williams will trade her scheming ways on TV comedy “Ugly Betty” for a role on a show where just about everyone seems to be plotting something: “Desperate Housewives.”

The ABC network said on Tuesday that Williams will play a housewife in the upcoming new season starting in September, in a regular role that will see her make an appearance in just about every episode.

“Desperate Housewives,” which had its 2010 season finale on Sunday, stars Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman and Eva Longoria Parker as four denizens of suburban Wisteria Lane. Their lives are more dramatic and often times sordid than the facade they try to maintain, but they stay close friends.

Williams played Wilhelmina Slater, an editor of fashion magazine MODE on the ABC comedy “Ugly Betty,” which ran from 2006 until it was canceled this year.

Her character, Wilhelmina, butted heads with the wealthy scion of the publishing family that owned MODE, as she tried to wrestle away control of the company in a series of secret schemes.
